The Process

Growing up, helichrysum italicum was a common sight on our Sunday walks and hikes. Abundant and persistent in its yellow beauty, it was like sunshine in the wild fields. As with everything that is naturally there, we took it for granted – not knowing about the treasure in our own back yard. A few years ago, the word was out. Numerous essential oil enthusiasts raved about the skin benefits of our helichrysum italicum and offered a business opportunity we could enjoy as a family.

Economic conditions in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are causing many young people to seek work elsewhere, reluctantly leaving the beautiful land they love. Enter helichrysum italicum. We had the land, the cultivating experience and the desire to stay. We selected the best seeds and embarked on a family adventure.

After helichrysum italicum is harvested, it goes into a distillery where the steam opens up the plant and all of the oil accumulates on top of the water, separated and ready for bottling. During the first distillation process, Dario promptly earned second degree burns by spilling that water on a good portion of his arm. While it is not recommended to put any kind of oil on an open wound, Dario applied (cooled) distillation water – still containing much of the helichrysum italicum components – on the burn regularly as it began to heal. Two weeks later, the marks were almost imperceptible. We were stunned! Of course no one thought to take pictures at the time…

 

What does it do?

As the popularity of helichrysum italicum grew, so did the public awareness of its many health and beauty benefits. Also known as immortelle or the everlasting flower that retains its color and beauty long after being picked, helichrysum italicum is becoming a high-end anti-aging staple.

How do we use it?

We have been adding our helichrysum italicum essential oil to creams and lotions we already use. Our blog will feature some of the DIY creations but even if you plan to stick with one skincare brand for the rest of your life, you can simply give it a rejuventaing anti wrinkle/anti blemish boost by mixing our 100% pure helichrysum italicum essential oil into it at about 5% dilution. That is to say, we recommend pouring 5+ml of helichrysum italicum essential oil into 100ml of cream/lotion/oil of your choice.

Likewise, if you are trying to soothe a painful spot, a couple drops may do the trick. Being so concentrated, simply mix a couple drops with some oil or lotion to spread over a larger area. We often use it undiluted and recommend you test a spot in case of any sensitivity – which is rare.
